Masthead Typography Research

In this blog post, I will be comparing the Masthead Typography of two magazines, and then choosing the font I will be using for my fashion magazine. Choosing a font is important because depending on what it is, it can convey many different messages. For example, the font can be playful as well as serious, setting the mood. A masthead is also important as it is the main introducer of your magazine. It is the name most widely known by others.

The color used in this masthead is a bright red. This suggests that the magazine focuses on romance as that is what the color red represents. The color is also incredibly bright and bold in comparison to the white background. The font is in Serif and is bolded. However half of the v and u are unbolded. Due to the Serif font used, it gives the magazine a more fancy and sophisticated look. The word is large in size and the letters are all capital. This allows the name of the magazine to be easily remembered. The largeness and boldness of the masthead may also create a feeling of superiority.

The masthead used in this magazine is light pink. This indicates that the magazine is geared towards women as this color is associated with girls. The color compliments the darker shade of pink nicely as well. The font used is Sans-Serif and the entirety of the word is bolded. Due to how Serif is not present in the font, it makes the magazine appear more casual and not as formal when compared to Vogue magazine. Similarly to Vogue magazine, Cosmopolitan is in all capital letters, creating a strong identity. This makes the magazine seem that a large amount of people would know the name as the big lettering can be less complicated to see, and then remembered.
